Balance & Vestibular Therapy
When Balance Feels Uncertain, Everyday Life Can Change.
You may feel dizzy when turning your head, unsteady when walking, or hesitant on stairs. Maybe you have experienced a fall, feel off-balance in crowded places, or avoid activities because you are afraid of losing your footing.
These challenges can affect your confidence and independence. Balance and vestibular physical therapy can help you understand what is affecting your movement and develop strategies to move more safely and confidently.
Do You Ever Feel…
- Unsteady when walking or changing direction?
- Dizzy when getting out of bed or turning your head?
- Less confident on stairs or uneven surfaces?
- Afraid of falling or falling repeatedly?
- Uncomfortable in busy environments or when moving through crowds?
- Limited in activities because you don't trust your balance?
If these experiences sound familiar, a physical therapy evaluation may help identify factors contributing to your symptoms.
Understanding Your Balance
Balance depends on several systems working together - including your vision, inner ear, nervous system, strength, and ability to coordinate movement.
When one or more of these systems is affected, everyday movements can become more difficult. Your therapist evaluates how these factors work together and how your symptoms affect real-life activities such as walking, standing, turning, reaching, getting up from a chair, and navigating your surroundings.
Specialized Vestibular Rehabilitation
For appropriate vestibular conditions, therapy may focus on helping your brain and body better respond to movement and changes in position.
Depending on your condition, treatment may include vestibular exercises, balance activities, gaze stabilization, movement training, or positional techniques when clinically appropriate. For conditions such as BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), specific canalith repositioning techniques are used to resolve positional dizziness.
Building Confidence Through Movement
The goal is not simply to perform balance exercises in the clinic. It is to help you feel more secure getting out of bed, walking through your home, using stairs, shopping, exercising, and participating in everyday life.
Your therapist gradually challenges your balance and movement in a safe, controlled environment while helping you develop strategies you can use outside the clinic.
