What to Expect at Wilmington Physical Therapy & Wellness

Prepare For Your First Visit With Complete Confidence

Starting physical therapy is an empowering step toward less pain and better movement. From the moment you walk through our doors at 4561 Kirkwood Highway, our dedicated team ensures your experience is smooth, comfortable, and focused entirely on you.

Step 01

When to Arrive

Your initial evaluation lasts approximately 60 minutes. Please arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and complete any initial registration paperwork.

✓ Gives you plenty of time without feeling rushed before your one-on-one session begins.

Step 02

What to Bring

Please bring your physician referral/prescription (if you have one), your primary insurance card, a valid photo ID, and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy movement.

✓ Sneakers or athletic shoes are recommended so your therapist can evaluate your walking mechanics.

Step 03

Evaluation & Care Plan

Your licensed physical therapist conducts a private one-on-one examination, analyzes your joint and muscle mechanics, discusses your personal goals, and establishes your customized recovery roadmap.

✓ 100% direct One-on-One care every visit - never handed off to an aide.

What Happens During Your First Visit Evaluation?

At Wilmington Physical Therapy & Wellness, we believe effective rehabilitation begins with understanding the person - not just the condition. We take the time to listen and evaluate thoroughly:

  • Discussion of Your History & Goals: We talk through when your pain or condition started, what aggravates or eases it, your daily work demands, hobbies, athletic activities, and what goals matter most to you.
  • Comprehensive Physical Examination: Your therapist checks range of motion, muscle strength, joint mobility, flexibility, posture, balance, and neurological reflexes where appropriate.
  • Functional Movement Analysis: We observe how you perform everyday motions - walking, bending, sitting, standing, squatting, or lifting - to identify movement restrictions and compensatory habits.
  • Initial Hands-On Treatment: When clinically appropriate, your therapist will provide gentle manual therapy or initial therapeutic exercises during the first visit to start relieving irritation immediately.
  • Custom Home Exercise Program (HEP): You receive clear, guided exercises to practice safely between sessions so you feel empowered and involved in your recovery from day one.
  • Ongoing Reassessment: Your progress is tracked at every visit, and your care plan advances as you rebuild strength and mobility.

Insurance & Payment Transparency

We understand that healthcare billing can be confusing. That’s why our clinic team verifies your insurance benefits before or during your first visit:

  • Major Insurances: We accept most major health insurance plans.
  • Auto Accidents (PIP): Delaware Personal Injury Protection covers physical therapy with zero copays in most cases.
  • Workers' Comp: Covered work injuries typically involve zero out-of-pocket expenses for employees.
  • Self-Pay & Wellness: Clear, transparent options available if you are uninsured or continuing beyond therapy.
