Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
Recover With a Plan. Rebuild With Confidence.
Surgery is only one part of recovery. The right rehabilitation program helps restore movement, rebuild strength, and safely guide you back to the activities that matter to you.
At Wilmington Physical Therapy and Wellness, we provide individualized post-surgical rehabilitation designed around your procedure, recovery stage, medical precautions, and personal goals.
Supporting Your Recovery From the Start
Physical therapy can help you prepare for surgery when appropriate and guide your recovery afterward. Your program is adjusted throughout the healing process as your strength, mobility, and functional abilities improve.
What We Help With
Post-surgical rehabilitation may include recovery following:
- Joint Replacement Surgery (Hip, Knee, Shoulder)
- ACL, MCL & Meniscal Procedures
- Rotator Cuff & Shoulder Surgery
- Hip & Knee Arthroscopic Procedures
- Fracture Repair & Hardware Fixation
- Foot & Ankle Surgery (Achilles repair, fusion)
- Spinal Procedures (Discectomy, Laminectomy, Fusion)
- Other Orthopedic & Musculoskeletal Surgeries
Rehabilitation Designed Around Your Recovery
Every surgery and every recovery is different. Your physical therapist will consider your procedure, healing stage, medical precautions, current abilities, and personal goals when developing your treatment plan.
Therapy may focus on restoring mobility, rebuilding strength, improving balance and movement control, reducing functional limitations, and gradually returning you to the activities you need and enjoy.
As you progress, your program evolves with you - from foundational movement and gentle strengthening to more advanced functional activities and return-to-activity training.
What to Expect
Your therapist will review your surgical history, precautions, current symptoms, mobility, strength, and functional abilities. Based on your evaluation and surgeon's medical guidance, we develop a personalized rehabilitation plan.
Treatment may include therapeutic exercise, mobility training, strengthening, neuromuscular re-education, balance and functional training, manual therapy when appropriate, and a customized home exercise program.
Pre-Surgical Physical Therapy (Pre-Hab)
When appropriate, physical therapy before surgery can help you understand your recovery plan and address strength, mobility, and functional limitations beforehand. Preparing your body and understanding what to expect can provide a stronger foundation for rehabilitation after surgery.
